BIO:
Alison Taylor graduated as an Occupational Therapist in 1990, from Sydney University, Australia.
She has worked in and out of the US for over 32 years and obtained her CHT in 2001. Since that time Alison has presented at 7 ASHT Conferences, multiple state ASHT and OT conferences, and special interest group meetings in GA, IL, NH, SC, TX and LA. She was an invited speaker for the Asia Pacific Hand Surgery and Hand Therapy conference in Melbourne Australia in 2020, as well as the Virtual IFSSH/ISFHT/EFSHT, 2020 and 2022. Alison is also the invited Keynote speaker for the 2023 Asia Pacific Hand Surgery and Therapy Conference Singapore Malaysia 2023
She became a Kinesio Taping Instructor in 2011, and has been a guest lecturer for the OT programs at TWU, LSU and Sydney University. Alison was published in the JHT titled "The forgotten radial nerve: A conceptual framework for treatment of lateral elbow pain"in 2021 and is currently is developing protocols for elbow fractures, lateral and medial epicondylitis, and radial nerve impairment.
RATIO: 1/16 instructor to participant.
This class with have lead instructor- Alison Taylor with assistant instructor Nisha Patel-Venketsamy
Outline for course “Treating without Pain” 2 day intensive INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED course 16 hours.
This course is designed to explore current treatment concepts for the hand and upper extremity, including Kinesio Taping, Mobilization with Motion “MWM”, cupping and IASTM.
This course will explore different treatment options for common hand elbow diagnoses. It will teach you how to treat without pain and assess the patient from the perspective of the 4 S’s- Skin, Scar, Sensation and Swelling.
Discussion and demonstration of how fascia, muscle imbalance and joint alignment can contribute to pain and ROM, will be integrated throughout the course. Outside the box thinking, including, joint positioning and alignment, Kinesio taping, and skin and fascial mobilization all be demonstrated.
There will also be lab time which will allow participants to gain a hands-on knowledge of how these techniques can assist with UE rehab.
Objectives:
Participants will gain a preliminary knowledge of all the concepts presented, and how they relate to the practice of Hand Therapy. They will be immediately able to apply these concepts on patients with success.
1. Determine how the 4 S’s (Skin, Scar, Sensation and Swelling) contribute to pain in the UE.
2. Understanding of how muscle imbalance and alignment can contribute to pain in the UE
3. Utilize manual and soft tissue techniques to improve patient outcomes
4. Understanding the philosophy of and basic concepts of Taping and MWM
5. Learn basic Joint positioning and corrections to reduce pain in common diagnoses.
6. Pick up some “ PEARLS” for treating without pain
Audience:
This is a highly intensive course targeted for CHT/OT/PT/COTA,PTA with a current knowledge of all hand to shoulder conditions. The level is intermediate to advanced

Research Discussion, Summary, Questions,
This day 2 of a combined concepts course will give you new techniques that can be used to treat pain conditions in the upper extremity. It will include significant demonstration, lab and video evidence to present the concept of muscle imbalance and alignment
This will include looking closer at the agonist /antagonist muscle relationship, joint kinematics with movement as well as compensation movement patterns.
In other words, …what muscles are “under functioning “and what are “over functioning”
We will explore techniques on how to improve joint ROM, eliminate pain and sensitivity, and restore balance to the upper extremity. Joint mobilization and taping applications will clearly demonstrate muscle imbalance and current research will be included to support these concepts.
This is a " Thinking out side the box" class with lots of lab and manual time.
The most functional class you will ever take.
Course outline may be modified at times per class focus. Wear lab clothes for upper extremity and please bring scissors
